Dog tracking is the skilled practice of using a trained dog’s extraordinary sense of smell to follow the trail left behind by a person. As a dog moves along a track, it reads tiny scent clues including shed skin cells and lingering body odor, that are invisible to humans but form a detailed “map” for the dog. Handlers work closely with their dogs, interpreting subtle changes in body language, pace, and focus to understand when the dog is confidently on the trail or searching for it. This teamwork allows tracking dogs to locate missing people and assist in search-and-rescue and law enforcement operations, often in difficult terrain or long after the original track was made.
